News - del Toro, Cameron & The "Mountains of Madness"

Dark Horizons - Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:09

I'll try to put this into an expression you can easily understand - "OOOOH GOD YESSSSSS!".

Guillermo del Toro is set to direct and James Cameron is negotiating to produce a 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" reports Deadline.

The atmospheric 1931 story follows explorers in Antarctica who uncover the remains of highly evolved creatures neither plant or animal. Investigating a gigantic mountain range, they come upon an abandoned ancient city. Their explorations underground causes something to stir from its slumber.

del Toro meanwhile has been talking up the other projects he's linked to with MTV. He says makeup tests on "Frankenstein" are about to get underway in a few weeks while all the talk of him doing a "Van Helsing" project is just online bullshit.

News - Jones Talks "Source Code," "Dredd"

Dark Horizons - Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:09

"Moon" director Duncan Jones tells Man Made Movies that his next project, the thriller "Source Code" with Jake Gyllenhaal, will be out early next year.

"My edit is complete, and we are working hard on visual effects, choosing a composer and trying the film out on a few people just to see how it goes over. Lots to do really, but everything is coming together" says Jones when asked about the film's current status.

Tone wise he says "I know that performance-wise we got some great stuff from Jake, Michelle, Vera and Jeffrey. I know that the script was always tight, and the film has a hell of a fast pace to it. I know that I did my best to inject some humor where I could."

Jone was also linked to the new "Judge Dredd" reboot at one point, a fact he doesn't deny - "I would have loved to do the Judge Dredd movie that is underway. I was in fact sent the script to look at. Its a great script, and I hope I will not rue the decision of passing on it."

So why did he pass on it? "I had such a strong idea of what I wanted to do with a Dredd movie, I could not bring myself to take it on and not do it my way! … and its not like I could do it as a sequel either; my Dredd would have been really weird, and dark and funny, but not your traditional introduction to a hero character. I don't even know if I could have made my version of the film pitch-able. It was maybe too off the wall."

News - "Sex and the City" Closes Its Legs

Dark Horizons - Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:09

Kristin Davis tells E! Online that a third "Sex and the City" movie is looking unlikely due to the less than stellar success of the sequel.

"I don't think so, not that I know of. I wish it was so that we were continuing but I don't know. We made [about] 300 million internationally. There was so much hype, not coming from us, but the media hyped it up and then they tore it down" says Davis.

She adds that "I could be wrong. Obviously there was a time when we thought there was no movie happening so you never know. But it is not looking great."

The first "Sex and the City" movie grossed $415 million internationally from a $65 million budget and scored weak reviews. This year's sequel cost $100 million but grossed a smaller $280 million and opened to utterly scathing reviews even from strong supporters of the first film.

News - Noyce Still Intent On Playing "Dirt Music"

Dark Horizons - Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:09

Out doing the promotional rounds for "Salt", director Philip Noyce tells KCRW's The Treatment that his long-gestating film adaptation of Tim Winton's Booker Prize winning novel "Dirt Music" could be his next project.

Noyce confirmed some several year old rumors that Russell Crowe would play the male lead - a grieving country musician-turned-poacher in Western Australia who begins a relationship with a neighbour.

Crowe has also been preparing music for the film, Noyce saying "Russell has been preparing for it for a number of years. He's written and recorded a number of songs that'll be in the movie. In fact he's going on tour later this year with his band and people around America will be able to hear a lot of the songs well in advance of the movie coming out."

Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and the late Heath Ledger were also linked to the project at one point or another in the past. Funding is still being assembled with a 2011 shoot apparently on the cards.

Director Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler") has apparently abandoned the project which, combined with MGM's financial situation, "is now considered officially dead". Last year Aronofsky and David Self were said to be working on the script.

Meanwhile Jeff Bridges tells MTV News that he and the Coen brothers have talked about a sequel to "The Big Lebowski" but it's looking highly unlikely.

"We talked about it occasionally [while filming 'True Grit'], but no plans man, no plans… No, no, no, I don't think it's gonna happen" says Bridges.

News - "Girl" Sequel Talk With David Fincher

Dark Horizons - Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:09

David Fincher has denied claims that either he or Sony have made plans to shoot the three books in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy back-to-back or are already in early prep on any sequels.

The "Zodiac" and "Fight Club" helmer told MTV News over the weekend that "No, there's no plans for that right now. You got to make one that people want to see a sequel to before you can make a sequel".

He also confirmed his intent to shoot and set the film in Sweden, specifically "Stockholm. Uppsala. In the north". There is also no plans to move the setting to the U.S. either - "You have to. What, are you going to put it in Seattle?… Seattle noir [laughter]".
